Varicose & Spider Veins

Varicose and Spider Vein Treatment Options

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are large veins that are raised above skin level. These swollen veins are created when blood vessels twist and turn, sometimes up and down the length of the leg, and are usually easy to see through the skin.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins and they are red, purple, and blue veins that also twist and turn around the skin. Spider veins are usually found on the legs or the face.

What causes Varicose and Spider Veins?

There are different causes of varicose and spider veins, but some of the more common causes include:

 Pregnancy, puberty, and menopause

Occupations that keep people standing such as nurses, hair stylists, and factory workers

 History of blood clots

 Birth control pills

 Hormone replacement therapy

Although varicose and spider veins occur more often in women, they can also occur in men, and they appear more often as people age. It is estimated that while at least 30% of the population may suffer from varicose or spider veins, the number may be as high as 60%.

Varicose and Spider Veins Symptoms

Many people who suffer from varicose veins complain of pain in their legs, which they often describe as constant aching or even cramping. Their legs may also feel tired more often, there may be a restlessness or burning, throbbing, tingling, or a feeling of heaviness in their legs that can best be relieved by putting their legs up or wearing support hose.

Women may report worse symptoms during parts of their menstrual cycle or while they are pregnant.

Although less common, patients may also complain of leg ulcers or a darkening of the skin, and there may be swelling of the legs associated with varicose veins. At times, varicose veins can also cause blood clots to form, which can be painful and dangerous.

Dr. Robert Lenington at Lone Star Surgery in Sulphur Springs & Rockwall, Texas can help give a proper diagnosis to leg pain, as well as a treatment to relieve these symptoms.

Varicose and Spider Vein Treatment Options

Some treatments for varicose veins and spider veins include wearing an orthopedic stocking on the leg to create better blood flow and to reduce the pain associated with these conditions.

Venefit (VNUS Closure)

Venefit uses radio-frequency energy to send heat to the vein wall which will shrink and seal the vein. When the diseased vein is closed, blood stops flowing through it and flows instead to surrounding and healthy veins. This causes a relief of symptoms and is conducted as an outpatient procedure. Normal activities can be resumed in one to two days.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

This varicose vein treatment makes small slits in the skin and removes the superficial veins through the incision. Patients are able to walk immediately after surgery and are ready to go about their normal, everyday activities. Compression stockings will be prescribed by the doctor, and there may be some bruising and swelling following the procedure, but pain is minimal and decreases as long as compressions stockings are worn.

In this procedure, a laser is inserted into a leg vein and a laser light causes the affected vein to close; blood then flows through healthy veins that surround the damaged vein.

Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for spider veins and has been used since the 1930s. A saline solution is injected into the vein, which will cause the vein to disappear within three to six weeks. This procedure can be performed as an outpatient surgery.

Cosmetic Laser Treatment

Lone Star Surgery also performs cosmetic laser treatment of spider veins on the legs/face and cherry hemangiomas.
